ABOUT YOUR EYES
-
Clouding of the lens causing progressive vision loss, glare, and difficulty with night driving. Treated definitively with cataract surgery and placement of an intraocular lens; premium lens options can reduce dependence on glasses.
-
Dr. Marshburn will discuss all the options from standard lens, specialty lens, to the LenSx Laser. Together you will decide what option is right for you. Here are some of the options.
STANDARD LENS
TORIC LENS
MULTIFOCAL LENS
LIGHT ADJUSTABLE LENS
LENSX LASER
-
Corneal disease and infections: Pain, redness, light sensitivity, decreased vision. Bacterial, viral, fungal, or inflammatory causes require targeted medical therapy; severe cases may need corneal transplantation.
-
Diabetic retinopathy: Damage to retinal blood vessels from diabetes leading to vision loss. Managed by tight blood sugar control, intravitreal injections, laser therapy, and retinal surgery when needed. Regular dilated retinal exams are critical.
-
Dry eye disease: Irritation, burning, fluctuating vision due to tear-film instability. Managed with artificial tears, anti-inflammatory drops, punctal occlusion, and treating underlying contributors.
-
The primary types of glaucoma are Open-Angle and Closed-Angle. A group of optic nerve diseases often associated with elevated intraocular pressure, causing peripheral vision loss and potentially irreversible blindness if untreated. Managed with drops, laser, and surgery when necessary. Regular screening and visual field testing are essential.
Open-angle glaucoma is the most common form, where the trabecular meshwork offers increased resistance to fluid outflow, leading to increased eye pressure without noticeable symptoms initially.
Closed-angle glaucoma occurs when the angle between the cornea and iris narrows, blocking fluid drainage and causing a rapid increase in eye pressure, often accompanied by symptoms like severe headache, nausea, and blurred vision
-
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD): Degeneration of the central retina causing central vision loss.
Dry AMD is managed with nutritional supplements and monitoring
If you qualify Dr. Marshburn offers The Valeda Light Therapy for dry AMD. This treatment involves 9 short sessions over a 3-5 week period after that you repeat the sessions again, every 4 months.
Neovascular (wet) AMD is treated with intravitreal injections to reduce leakage and preserve vision.
-
Refractive errors (nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, presbyopia): Blurry or strained vison caused by the eye’s shape. Corrected with glasses.
-
Retinal detachment and tears: Sudden floaters, flashes, or a curtain-like shadow across vision are red flags. These are surgical emergencies prompt evaluation and treatment (laser, vitrectomy, scleral buckle) can save vision.
-
Visual acuity and refraction
Slit-lamp
Intraocular pressure measurement (tonometry)
Dilated fundus exam
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) for retina and anterior segment
Visual field testing
Fundus photography
Corneal topography
